Our call from Jennifer our new vet students this morning was good news. They are working toward releasing Kirby by Friday if all goes as planned. Kidneys are still doing well. They are doing one more liver test today to try and rule out liver involvement conclusively. We will go down this afternoon with a long list of questions to prepare us to bring him home and help him finish recuperating. We don't know yet how long it will be before they will feel he's well enough to do the Cushing's Disease testing. We do know that keeping him healthy, hydrated and in an environment that is secure will reduce his production of cortisol as much as possible without other medical interventions.
We found out
last night that 50% of adrenal tumors are malignant but thankfully he
doesn't have any of the symptoms that go along with adrenal cancer so we
are optimistic that his is a benign tumor that is wrecking havoc on his
heath but not a malignancy, at this point. Strangely adrenal tumors
can't be removed very successfully and even biopsying them is not a good
idea since it can cause the dog to produce lots more cortisol from the
stress of the procedures. So we are very much trusting God that he is
going to handle that like he is in control of all else.
They have worked diligently to help Kirby and to keep our expenses down as much as possible under the circumstances. We are blessed beyond measure and actively exploring pet insurance for the other two dogs in our lives. Live and learn. NOT the way we had planned our summer vacation but God's timing IS perfect. No other time could we have devoted this much time and attention to Kirby and I have no doubt that he would not have made it if we had not been here to see his condition go down so dramatically hour by hour before we arrived at MSU vet school.
Thank you for your prayers. Even though he is coming home soon please continue to remember him (and us) in your prayers. It's certainly not like bringing home a pet that has been cured of a disease. He has been plummeted into his "senior" years at 91/2 years big time and will have many adjustments to make to get healthy and to have good future in his "golden years". If spoiling him anymore will add to his enjoyment, he's got that paws down. LOL
