Possible Trifexis or Bravecto Link...

June 11 at 10:52pm ·

We had been using TRIFEXIS (given once a month) but hadn't used any flea/tick medications for some time. Then in March we used BRAVECTO® (FLURALANER) which is a similar product for fleas and ticks given every 12 weeks. Our vet recommended it, I didn't think much about it and didn't research it until AFTER Kirby started having problems but then I found it had only been approved since 2014.
We do not know that the Bravecto had anything to do with Kirby's problems (we have three dogs who used it) but I've just had a friend say that her dog had weakness in his hind legs after the first dose and we noticed that about Kirby, too. IF a dog has a predisposition to a problem with liver and kidney function I think these three month pills for fleas and ticks are too harsh and I will NOT give them to any of my dogs again.
IF you use, Trifexis or Bravecto or other similar products be very careful to observe your pet. There has been a great deal of information about Trifexis and links to death in dogs. Reactions may not happen immediately but rather over a period of time. Braveta hasn't been on the market long enough for similar complaints to Trifexis to become public yet. The vets at MSU are looking at the Bravecto as a possible cause of the kidney failure and if we find out anything conclusive we will certainly share. Until then, I would say just use with caution especially in older dogs.
